The HE Leadership Seminar builds on and promotes the Army as one of the most tested pragmatists of leadership. It showcases the Army’s unique need for and ability to build leadership qualities.

Most, if not all, universities and higher education (HE) institutions now offer some form of undergraduate skills course or award. These run alongside students’ undergraduate courses and are designed to help students build and demonstrate the wider work skills they will need to successfully enter and thrive in the world of work. Leadership frequently forms one part of these courses and awards.

This HE Leadership Seminar is likely to be relevant to all university or HE students. It explores a simple but effective framework that will allow participants to develop, practice and reflect upon their own leadership capabilities now and in their future career. The goal is not to create fully formed leaders, but to help each participant realise their potential and demonstrate this to future employers in their applications and interviews.

The Seminar can standalone or can be offered to HE institutions, so it forms part of their wider undergraduate skills development programmes or award schemes.

The Seminar comprises two fast-paced sessions, lasting 1 hour or more each or a combined session lasting approximately 2 hours, that can be run consecutively or on different days. Each session blends simple theory with practical tasks and opportunities for reflection. Sessions should last 1 hour but can be extended to include more time for reflection and discussion.

Two new surveys conducted by the Pet Food Manufacturers’ Association (PFMA) among 2,500 adults and 400 teachers confirm the need to teach about pets in schools.

89% of adults, 78% of primary teachers and 70% of secondary teachers all agree that it is important to teach responsibility through learning how to care for pets. More adults thought it was important to teach younger children how to care for pets than it was to teach them about sex education and money management. Unfortunately the research among teachers revealed that caring for pets is not currently taught at 60% of primary and 85% of secondary schools.

We work with Dogs Trust, Cats Protection and Greyhounds in Need to develop curriculum support materials for teachers – helping them educate the pet owners of tomorrow on the rights of our pets and the responsibilities we have as owners for them. It’s something we’re passionate about and hope we can help make a difference.

We are delighted that the Employability Skills Workshops developed for The British Army, have been shortlisted in the Best Secondary Resource/Equipment – non ICT for the Education Resources Awards 2012.

The British Army have been supporting schools for over 15 years with the provision of a variety of free curriculum linked resources and activities. In 2011, The Army recognised the need to offer relevant, practical activities for students aged 14-19 with a focus on Employability Skills, something that as an organisation they are well positioned to deliver. The Army commissioned us to work with them to develop an offering that would address this need. The response from schools and colleges has been hugely positive and we are delighted that the efforts of not only our team who worked on the Workshop development have been recognised, but also the Army’s ongoing commitment to delivering quality resources and support for education.

3M Careerwise (www.3Mcareerwise.co.uk) is aimed primarily at students aged 11-14 – particularly those who are considering their choice of GCSE subjects.

The website uses a personal profile questionnaire to help the students focus on their interests and what motivates them, it then matches their results with a selection of short video interviews of the 3M employees that share similar characteristics.

Giving her support to the launch of the resource is broadcaster Maggie Philbin, who has long championed the importance of students choosing STEM subjects as a path to future careers – “3M Careerwise is a great idea to get the students thinking about the types of careers out there and the qualifications they’ll need to pursue them.”

In 2009, we produced a plethora of educational resources to support Spanish primary school teachers, who teach English as a foreign language to children aged 9 to 12 years old, across Years 4 to 6. The resources support the teaching and learning of English vocabulary and phrases relating to the expression of feelings and emotions, using images, data and a story based on how GIN help many galgos (Spanish greyhounds) which suffer from cruelty and abandonment.

EC have been working closely with GIN this year, to produce a CD-ROM containing these resources and some new fun games for pupils, which will be sent into Spanish schools at the end of 2011.

The CD-ROM gives teachers fun materials and activities, convenience and flexibility when teaching English to pupils, which we hope will extend the reach of GIN’s work in Spanish schools.
