Maritime and Coastguard Agency

EC have worked with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) on a number of activities:

Key Stage 1&2 Activity Booklet, Seaside Safety Leaflet, and Display Panel (2005)

Activity Booklet and Seaside Safety LeafletThe Activity Booklet for 5-11 year olds, encourages learning of the MCA’s Stay Safe Code through a story based activity with reflection points, poems and role play.

The Seaside Safety Leaflet, available from beach centres and TICs, provides information for adults, and activities for children on how to stay safe at coastal destinations.

The display panel shows a seaside scene that illustrates safe and dangerous messages and will be used at school and youth events by Coastguards.

Research Programme (2003)

EC undertook a review of MCA's water safety materials for 5-14 year olds; with a view to improving and extending the range of resources. Research was conducted over a 4 month period - desktop research established what water resources are available to schools. Focus groups established the perceived relevance of water safety and the curriculum opportunities. Questionnaires and interviews established how existing materials are being used, and how they could be better supported. The MCA were presented with detailed findings, analysis, evaluation and recommendations.
