Generation Green

Establishing the strengths of the sustainable schools programme

Background

With the launch of a programme restructure, British Gas was keen to measure how the change in Generation Green would be perceived by, and affect their relationship with, their existing teacher community. They also wanted to identify how teachers, who had not interacted with the programme to date, might be encouraged to see the benefits available to schools.

Aim

To establish the strengths of the programme; ensure that the structure is clear and simple and to determine areas of improvement to increase engagement levels within schools.

What did we do?

Online Focus Group (OFG)

British Gas wanted to collate responses from teachers in a controlled environment, to give teachers the opportunity to ‘speak out’. We recommended facilitating an Online Focus Group (OFG), due to the structured and in-depth nature of this method.

We developed a script of questions and recruited a spread of teachers of different key stages from across Britain to determine how successful the programme had been nationwide.  The 8 recruited teacher participants were tasked with reviewing a selection of resources to ensure they were familiar with the material.  Participants were then required to log on/call in to the focus group and discuss their views – both verbally and by writing to the focus group moderator. We found responses incredibly positive, with one teacher referring to the resources as “beautiful” and another explaining that “the best way to teach sustainability is through practical activities – something British Gas excels at”. The majority of teacher participants agreed that the programme is worthwhile, beneficial and filled with high quality teaching resources and activities.

Online Survey research

A further method used to evaluate Generation Green was an Online Survey. This ‘quick win’ method gave us the opportunity to collect quantitative feedback– responding to an urgent enquiry from the British Gas team; with initial enquiry to survey creation being less than an hour.

Using our Teacher Network, we were able to send out emails, instantly requesting responses from those teaching that day.

Again, the majority of teachers were in favour of Generation Green, reinforcing that the education programme has been well received by teachers. Most notably, 85.6% agreed that they would recommend the programme/resources to a colleague and 80% of teachers asked found the programme rewarding and easy to understand.
