Mapping your Future (FE)

Background

For students who are considering a career in the Army, the Army FE Bursary Scheme provides a financial incentive to stay in education longer to gain additional qualifications before joining. The Army can offer unique environments (within their partner colleges) in which students can practice a wide range of vocational and workplace skills.

Aim

To provide added value to partner colleges of the Army’s FE Bursary Scheme in the form of learning materials for students aged 16-25. Focusing on the development of students’ basic and key skills gives the Army visibility in the classroom, demonstrates support and enhances the experience of existing student bursars. This in turn helps to promote the bursary scheme to the wider student audience.

What did we do?

We created learning materials specifically targeted at Level 1 and 2 students across a range of courses including:

  • Public and Uniformed Services
  • Professional Cookery
  • Sport
  • Outdoor Activity Leadership
  • Performing Engineering Operations
  • Business and Administration
  • ICT
  • Engineering
  • Electro-technical Technology/Services
  • Mail Services
  • Warehousing and Storage
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Mechanical Engineering Services (Plumbing)
  • Construction
  • Port Operations
  • Civil Engineering
  • Plastering
  • Plant Operations

Using real soldiers to set the scene for learning and ‘challenge’ students, Mapping Your Future emphasises a mixture of technical and key/basic skills, reflecting how vocational learning is applied in the real world.

Results

An interactive, flexible and multimedia approach provides an engaging educational experience for students studying the supported courses, enabling them to see how their learning is applied in the context of real Army jobs. Resources are available to download from the Army in Education website. To date, 48 modules have been developed covering a breadth of courses, ensuring that the Army’s reach and visibility within colleges goes beyond students on Public and Uniformed Services courses.
