Background

Army in Education (AiE) is the continuation of a long-term association the British Army has with UK secondary schools and colleges. The website brings together the range of resources, activities and experiences the Army can offer to schools to enhance learning.

Aim

  • To create a teacher friendly website that acts as a one-stop platform housing all existing resources and that can be expanded upon as the Army’s support for schools extends.
  • Using the Army as a context for learning, audit the existing resource offering, identify opportunities and create new materials to keep the offering exciting and appealing.
  • Enable learning outcomes to complement and promote the Army personnel competencies, aiming to showcase their work within our communities and internationally – seeing beyond them as a defence force and their role on the front line of conflict.

What did we do?

  • Audited and revamped existing resource materials, to ensure an easily accessible platform for teachers of differing   age groups and subject areas.
  • Matrixed resource content into a structured resource database.
  • Identified curriculum opportunities for Army support, creating new resources supporting Geography, PE, Citizenship, History and Assemblies.
  • Utilised Army themes and scenarios, such as Antarctic expeditions, to ensure the resource offering provides an engaging and alternative approach to learning.

Results

In the six months following its launch, the Army in Education site received 43,000 visitors, which exceeded expectations. We continue to have a role in the structure of AiE and maintain fresh and exciting content.
